The Generosity Project

PROJECT OVERVIEW

A Lakota-Driven CPTED Model
The Generosity Project vision is to reduce violence by shaping the physical and social environment to increase safety, activity, visibility, and community ownership. However, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) has rarely been evaluated in Indigenous communities and has never been fully co-developed with Lakota cultural frameworks.

The Wancantognaka Project addresses this gap by grounding CPTED in Lakota teachings such as:

  • Wancantognaka — generosity

  • Wolakota — being a good relative

  • Mitakuye Oyasin — all are related

  • Wakanyeja Kin Wakan Pi — children are sacredThrough this lens, CPTED becomes not only an environmental intervention, but also a cultural, relational, and healing practice forged in partnership with the community.
